The Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning (CTL) is committed to the preparation and professional learning of educators and is looking for a dynamic and creative individual to complement and support our shared vision.  We invite applications for a full-time Probationary (Tenure-track) position at the Assistant Professor rank, in Physical & Movement Education, Health & Well-being Education, and Outdoor & Place-Based Education, commencing July 1, 2023, or on a date mutually agreed upon. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • engage in teaching, research, service and graduate student supervision in the areas of Physical & Movement Education, Health & Well-being Education, and Outdoor & Place-Based Education;

  • teach and contribute to course and program development in the undergraduate programs (Bachelor of Education and Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education), in the areas of Physical Education and Health Education, at early, middle and senior years levels;

  • teach in and contribute to course and program development within the newly developed Master of Education specialization in Studies in Contemplative, Holistic and Integrative Education within the department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning;

  • be expected, with support, to develop and sustain strong working relationships both within campus and with other educational organizations and professional and community partners within the field; and

  • be expected to be able to teach in a variety of delivery modes.

Qualifications:

At the time of the appointment, applicants must have, or be near the completion of, a Ph.D. degree in Physical & Movement Education, Health & Well-being Education, Outdoor & Place-Based Education or a related discipline. A successful candidate who is close to completion of their Ph.D. may be appointed to a term position at the rank of Lecturer until successful completion of their degree, at which time they will convert to a probationary (tenure-track) appointment as an Assistant Professor.  Successful candidates must have experience teaching in K-12 school settings (or equivalent).

The ideal candidate will:

  • provide evidence of research contributions to at least 1, preferably 2, of the three areas: Physical & Movement Education; Health & Well-being Education; and Outdoor & Place-based Education;

  • demonstrate interest, ability and experience in innovative, holistic, and integrative approaches to education;

  • provide evidence of teaching experience in Physical Education and Health Education in the K-12 school setting (or equivalent);

  • provide evidence of post-secondary teaching experience and/or student mentoring experience;

  • demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization and to responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action;

  • provide evidence of curricular and/or professional leadership in the 3 focus areas and/or in teacher education;

  • demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, climate change and ecological justice, as applicable to Outdoor and Place-based Education;

  • provide evidence of experience working collaboratively;

  • demonstrate a commitment to the importance of health, wellness and movement in schools and beyond.

Additional Information:

The Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning in the Faculty of Education has 27 full-time equivalent (FTE) faculty members who collectively contribute to the following accredited programs: Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (P.B.D.E.), Master of Education (M.Ed.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The Department of CTL currently offers the following M. Ed. specializations: Language & Literacy; Second Language Education; and Studies in CTL. However, the Department is in the process of seeking University Senate approval for the deletion of the latter specialization and the introduction of five new specializations: Arts, Community and Education; Critical Perspectives in Curriculum, Teaching and Pedagogy; Studies in Mathematics Education and Science Education; Indigenous (First Nations/Métis/Inuit) Perspectives in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning; and Studies in Contemplative, Holistic, and Integrative Education.
