topic: Inquiry about forming disability studies minor
Hi SDS members!
Myself and a few faculty members from Tulane University in New Orleans are interested in building a disability studies minor program (like many universities there are very very few disability course offerings for undergrads and graduates). We are also aiming to expand elective seminars for 2nd year medical students which cover critical disability theory. However we are at a loss of where and how to start and how to propose this to the Liberal Arts school and how best to organize it. It seems more feasible/fashionable to create a disability certificate through the continuing studies school, but a disability studies minor is the real goal. I know some of you have successfully initiated similar programs at your own universities and am eager for any tips, advice, funding mechanisms, or stories you can share!
Thank you so much,
you can write me directly as well at dsantoro@tulane.edu mailto:dsantoro@tulane.edu

You can renew for $40 or request a waiver. Best to post yourself than have me do it. The newest issue of this journal is on starting a minor………..

Oh! I let my membership lapse but am happy to renew. I’m doing a lot do unpaid community work at this time as I look for full time paid work so I will have to rely on the community self paid option if that’s ok.
I’ll do that and then send you a message to forward if that’s alright .
Thanks so much,
Daniella

Hi Daniella,
I bet folks would have suggestions. I used to keep a list of programs but it is woefully out of date. Your first issue will be which school. The SDS list is a benefit of membership. I could forward your message to the list but people would need to know to respond to you directly if you are not a member.
Good Luck,

HI Devva,
Is the SDS discussion list available for me to post a question to SDS members about disability studies curricula?
I am affiliated with Tulane University in New Orleans and myself and a few Tulane faculty members are interested in forming an independent disability studies minor (as well as a disability studies elective in the medical school)
We are all a bit at a loss for finding the right structure for how to approach this proposal to the university, how to apply for funding, etc.
I wanted to ask others, (including yourself!) who have successfully built up their own university's curricula for advice.
Thank you so much!
Daniella

In September and October 2021, the AIM-Lab hosted a three part online workshop on Audio Description (AD) led by https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwhoamitostopit.com%2Faboutthefilm%2Fabout-the-filmmakers%2F&data=04%7C01%7Carseli.dokumaci%40concordia.ca%7C85e6ad96f96048f3da6108d9fb25aa5c%7C5569f185d22f4e139850ce5b1abcd2e8%7C0%7C0%7C637816961449896394%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=IrA1bGZ8Xr8%2BfEV3vSf61ig4N8cXASKYqRmisbpK%2BI4%3D&reserved=0 Cheryl Green and https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Freidmymind.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7Carseli.dokumaci%40concordia.ca%7C85e6ad96f96048f3da6108d9fb25aa5c%7C5569f185d22f4e139850ce5b1abcd2e8%7C0%7C0%7C637816961449896394%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=F9BqWO%2Bjw85au1YHBIbZHnwOi4sjHeBp2GoaCNxcftQ%3D&reserved=0 Thomas Reid. Beginning from a place that centers the experiences of those who are blind and recognizes the art in audio description, the workshop invited participants to reflect critically both on visual information and to view it as more than mere access. The resulting series of works engage with AD in innovative and creative ways, exploring sound, text, movement, and their mixtures. From an audio-logo to a binder that comes to life to a sci-fi meditation to a lusty afternoon brewing mead to a video game adventure to artistic critiques of colonialism to glittering light that turn windowpanes into jellyfish, the collection of pieces in this online exhibit engages with the creative potentials of access.
Poster design by AIM designer/researcher Roï Saade.
Image description: Poster of the exhibit with dark blue lettering on a light green and textured background that resembles thick paper. On the top left corner appears the AIM lab’s logo. Under it “Audio Description in the Making” is written in capital letters and under it “online exhibition” appears in a rounded rectangle. At the very bottom left, a large letter A is traced-out in blue so the background appears in the middle of the letter. Next to this A, a long hyphen swooshes across the page to reach the letters I, M and L, A, B in the same style of lettering at the top-right of the poster. In the middle of the page appear the names of the curators, Thomas Reid and Cheryl Green. Under, the names of the artists: Salima Punjani and Diego Bravo; Prakash Krishnan and Sabrina Ward; Pipier Curtis and Nicholas Goberdhan; Jessie Stainton and Caitlin Chan; Simone Lucas; Arseli Dokumaci; Raphaëlle Bessette-Viens. At the bottom the funders logos appear in black: Canada research Chairs and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
