Since 2018 the U-Lead East Asia Disability Rights Forum has run an
experimental project that puts the lived experience of disabled people at
the heart of the research process. The project challenges traditional
paradigms, supporting disabled individuals to conduct research which can be
meaningful and catalytic to them and their communities. This is a radical
approach which critiques academic hierarchies and questions the power
dynamics which often characterize disability research.

Presenter: Stephen Hallett

Stephen is Chair of the UK charities China Vision and Ability Beyond
Borders, project manager of the U-Lead East Asia Disability Rights Forum
and a Visiting Professor at the School of Law, University of Leeds. After
graduating in Chinese Studies from the University of Leeds in 1983, he
spent most of the next four decades living, working and studying in China.
He produced TV and radio documentaries about life and culture in the PRC,
before moving into the field of disability and human rights. Stephen’s own
progressive sight loss gave him a strong affinity with visually impaired
and other disabled people in China. In 1999 he jointly established China
Vision, a UK-based charity committed to supporting the rights of disabled
people in the PRC. Since then Stephen has developed and supported numerous
grassroots disability rights projects, including radio production by blind
journalists, preschool inclusion and monitoring of the UN CRPD by
disability rights activists. Since 2018 he has been supporting
participatory action research by disabled people in China, Hong Kong and
Taiwan, through the U-Lead East Asia Disability Rights Forum.
