Abstract : The profound interconnectedness of colonial systems of oppression based on race, disability, and gender are often overlooked in hegemonic discourses both in disability studies and migration studies. This lecture therefore seeks to explore the multiple and shifting ways in which colonialism intersects with race, disability, and gender; forms part of an intricate web of social conditions that subjugate certain dimensions of 'disabled colonial subjectivities' that need to be addressed through the relevant intersectional policies of anti-discrimination, diversity and inclusion. In this regard, more postcolonial theoretical and empirical engagements are inherently relevant to examine interlocking colonial dynamics of disability, race, and gender as intersectional colonialities. Reflecting on the existing power relations, discursive representations, theories and methodologies, this lecture therefore addresses different manifestations of racialized and gendered ableism as intersectional mechanisms of discrimination.

Robel Afeworki Abay is a Black German Disability Justice Activist. He is currently working as a research assistant at the Institute of Sociology at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich. He has recently submitted his PhD at Humboldt University of Berlin on intersectional colonialities of racism and ableism. Previously, he has studied Sociology and Political Science at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and Cardiff University, Wales, UK, and Social Work in Interdisciplinary Research and Practice at the University of Kassel, Germany. He is also the Founder & Executive Director of the Network, Intersectional Disability Justice (IDJ): https://www.intersectional-disability-justice.org/en/intersectional-disability-justice-english/

Jane Freedman is professor at University Paris 8 and co-director of the Paris Centre for Sociological and Political Research (CRESPPA). Her research focuses on issues of gender, migration and asylum policies. She recently published several co-edited books : The Gender of borders. Embodied narratives of migration, violence and agency (Routledge, 2023); Anti-Trafficking, Sex Work and Migration Law and Policy in the EU (Routledge, 2022); and Gender-based Violence in Migration: Interdisciplinary, Feminist and Intersectional Approaches (Palgrave McMillan, 2022).
