Dear SDS members,

Call for research participants: Doctoral study on gatekeeping in journal peer review
A study conducted by Jamie Lundine, PhD Candidate, University of Ottawa
Supervised by: Dr. Michael Orsini, University of Ottawa

My name is Jamie Lundine (she/her) and I'm a PhD candidate in Feminist & Gender Studies at the University of Ottawa. My study is entitled A feminist analysis of power and privilege in health science and social science journal publishing. I am specifically interested in examining the role of social location, such as disability, gender, race, nationality, and sexuality and experiences of scholars publishing their research in peer-reviewed journals. I will be critiquing established systems of knowledge production in general and journal peer review using feminist science studies and critical disability studies frameworks. My study focuses on how women, non-binary, Two-Spirit, genderqueer, and genderfluid scholars navigate journal peer review processes and if and how journal peer review may contribute to experiences of exclusion within and beyond the academy. I would like to interview people with different body-mind experiences as first-authors, submitting to journals in the fields of health science or social sciences. The interview will be conducted in English.

If you decide to volunteer for this study, your participation will consist of a short demographic survey (15 questions) and a remote, one-on-one semi-structured interview that will take approximately 60-90 minutes of your time. The remote interview can take place on a platform of your choice (Zoom, Skype, phone, webchat, etc.). If you have any accessibility requirements, please let me know. During the interview, you will be asked questions such as: what did you know about the experience of peer review before you submitted your first journal article? With your permission, I would like to audio or video record (depending on the platform) the interview to ensure accurate transcription and analysis.

If you are interested in getting more information about or taking part in this study, please contact me directly in response to this email.
