Combatting racism, ableism and sexism in education: Insights from Brazil and the UK

This in person panel event will discuss inclusion and exclusion in education, specifically through experiences of racism, ableism and sexism, how they manifest and how they can be combated. The event will draw on expertise from the UK and Brazil, including, Brazilian activist and pedagogue, Luciana Viegas, current director of Vidas Negras com Deficiência Importam (Black Disabled Lives Matter); Tasnim Hassan, a doctoral student at Durham University researching the intersection of disability & race; and, Professor Vanita Sundaram, Dr Beth Bell and Dr Nadia Jessop, Centre for Research on Education and Social Justice at the University of York, who work together on a project studying Black and racially minoritised girls' experiences of public sexual harassment in the UK.

The event is being organised by the Anti-Racism Working Group, the Disabled Student’s Network, the University of York BAME Network, and the Department of Politics.
