Surviving Health Care in the 21st Century: The Disability Experience
Panel Discussion
Monday, March 21, 1:30 – 3:00

“Medicine and bioethics have widely ignored international human rights treaties in their application to disabled people" (Hansen, Janz, and Sobsey 106)

Professional expertise is critical for those working in the field, but lived experience of disabled people must not be overshadowed, and the social and political construction of disability must not be ignored (French and Swain 132).  Acknowledging and engaging with this ongoing conversation is critical for those working in healthcare.  Past disregard for the views of disabled people has been a major contributor to inappropriate and abusive policies and services (French and Swain 193).  Society’s treatment of disabled people, along with its rationality, affects more than a supposedly isolated fraction of society.  It speaks to society’s underpinning values, and our ability and willingness to recognize humanity and treat it in kind.  "A non-disablist world is a vision for us all, not just one section of society" (French and Swain 40).

Please join us for an exploration of how ableism in healthcare endangers persons with disabilities.  With an unorthodox approach to panel discussion, carefully selected panelists will be bringing their own concerns and perspectives to direct conversation where they have seen it needs to go.  The panel will consist of:
Dr. Diane Driedger, Assistant Professor, Disability Studies, University of Manitoba
Dr. Nancy Hansen, Director of the Interdisciplinary Master's Program, Disability Studies, University of Manitoba
Dr. Heidi Janz, Core Faculty Member and Assistant Adjunct Professor with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, University of Alberta
Moderating the discussion will be Dr. Reg Urbanowski, MScOT, EdD, Dean, College of Rehabilitation Sciences

ASL interpretation will be available.  Please email us if you require any accommodations:  mailto:funmi.owoade@umanitoba.ca funmi.owoade@umanitoba.camailto:kuehlc@myumanitoba.ca kuehlc@myumanitoba.ca
