Americans

Hello! My name is Emily Chen, and I am a Master’s student in Communication
Sciences and Disorders at Emerson College, studying to be a speech
therapist. I am seeking participants for my Master’s thesis, which is a
qualitative study that will use photography and group discussions to
explore the lived experiences of neurodivergent Asian American young
adults.

Below is information about my study. I have also attached PDF and JPG
fliers for email, social media, and in-person distribution. Please consider
sharing these materials with your networks and with anyone who might be
interested in this study.

Thank you so much for assisting me in recruiting participants for my
Master’s thesis! Your support means a lot to me.

Sincerely,

Emily Chen

Title of Study: Lived Experiences of Neurodivergent Asian American Young
Adults: A Photovoice Exploration

Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study is to describe the lived
experiences of neurodivergent Asian American young adults through
Photovoice and interpretive phenomenological analysis, through a DisCrit
theoretical framework.

  • Photovoice is a method to share the perspectives and experiences of
marginalized groups through taking photos, talking about them, and showing
    them to the community.
  • Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) means that I will
analyze the photos and what is said in group meetings to find similarities
    and differences among participant experiences.
  • DisCrit is a way of examining the intersection of race and disability.

What will study participants do, and how much time will this study take?
This study includes:

  • 1 initial group meeting (1 hour; not recorded)
  • 3 group meetings (2 hours maximum, including breaks; recorded). These
group meetings will take place 3 weeks apart from each other.
  • Final Exhibit: in-person at Emerson College’s Robbins Center & online
    (platform and format TBD)
  • Final group debrief meeting (1 hour; recorded)

Who can participate in the study? You are eligible to participate in this
study if you are:

  • Asian American
  • Age 18-29
  • Completed grades 1-12 in the US
  • Self-identifies as neurodivergent
  • Has a neurodevelopmental condition (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.)
  • Able to actively participate in group discussions on Zoom (each
meeting will be approximately 90 minutes) with accommodations
  • Willing to learn basic photography skills (using a smartphone camera
    is perfectly fine!)

I will be recruiting participants until October 1st, 2023.
