I'm Not Ashamed: Choosing Visibility, Changing the Narrative, and Embracing Myself

The topic of disability is undergoing a paradigm shift, but stigma and misconceptions remain pervasive within our society. Legally speaking, we have the right to choose where/when/how we self-disclose; but what are the practical implications? This is a difficult question in the presence of any disability. However, self-disclosure of invisible disabilities is fraught with a set of unique challenges. Disabilities, especially those that are invisible to the outsider, are often misunderstood by the general public. Lack of meaningful awareness can lead to diminished opportunity, discrimination, and other forms of harm. Thus, nothing about this process is easy or straightforward.
Here are some of the topics we will cover in our conversation:
- The factors we consider when deciding whether to self-disclose
- Strategies for discussing our characteristics from a position of power and confidence
- The process of embracing ourselves, despite changing circumstances
- Navigating the dual presence of visible and invisible disabilities
- How each of us can level up our ally ship skills
We hope that you will join us for this powerful learning session. As always, questions and comments from the audience are welcome.
In keeping with our ongoing commitment to accessibility, ASL and closed captioning will be provided. Please let us know if you have any additional access needs.
