Disability Studies Syllabi

Dear colleagues,
I am happy to send you a copy of my Freshman level disability studies course but want to draw your attention to my book published last year called: Ableism: The Causes and Consequences of Disability Prejudice. In it I review the various existential, ideological and media sources of both conscious and unconscious biases and structural barriers along with the interventions that work to reduce ableism. Each chapter is infused with the voices and narratives of disabled people and conclude with suggestions and resources for activists. It’s getting strong reviews and is very accessible to undergraduates. I spent my early career collecting all the social science research available on the fears, attitudes, myths, impacts and tested solutions on this topic.

You can order directly through Wiley or visit my website at https://ableismbook.com/

Hi all,

Here is the syllabus for "Disability in American Lit," and I will send along the syllabus for "Intro to Disability Studies in the Humanities" soon as well.

A few things I have done to teach during the pandemic: I did not make attendance mandatory, and in fact never took it. I also made assignment and paper deadlines suggested but completely optional and did not penalize for late submissions. I also gave students as many extensions and accommodations as they needed, even if my students were or weren't officially registered with the Student Disability Services Office at our university. I also did daily check-ins with students to see how they were doing, and started a group chat for our class on the GroupMe app. Since this class was the first class I have taught on my own, along with teaching during a pandemic, and not one but two (!) endometriosis surgeries that semester, I believe that these methods helped me as much as it helped them. (I know that sounds corny!)

I am still new to college teaching, so I still have many more things to learn, but I hope this will be helpful.

Best,

Maria
