Postition Overview

A senior member of the Wexner Center for the Arts Visitor Experience team, the Accessibility Manager conceives, develops, and oversees accessibility initiatives, working closely with the Visitor Experiences Director and team (Accessibility, Events, Store, Ticketing Services), the Program Team (Art & Resilience, Exhibitions, Learning and Public Practice, Film/Video, and Performing Arts), Design, and Communications & Marketing, Technical Services, and Facilities. Main point of contact with OSU’s ADA Coordinator’s Office on behalf of Wex interests and contributions to the field of arts and disability access. Accessibility budget approver.

Collaborates with curatorial programmers and LPP team to identify opportunities to support experiences within existing programming for individuals with accessibility needs (i.e., touch tours, relaxed or sensory-friendly programming, Deaf and Hard of Hearing community inclusion with ASL and / or CART captioning, visual guides, etc.). Serves as the internal liaison for visiting artists and speakers as needed regarding any requested access points, whether planned by contract or emergent during visit, and as a resource to explain and demonstrate various accessibility standards and practices at the Wex and OSU.

Serves as the public liaison for visitors with accessibility needs prior to, during, and following events (internal programs and facility rentals). Coordinates accessibility accommodations support including but not limited to live CART captioning, ASL interpretation, assistive listening devices, IR closed captioning systems, audio description, development, and implementation of supportive gallery materials for multisensory access, providing options for inclusive seating needs, wheelchairs, and other assistive equipment and technologies as needed for Wexner Center programming and rentals. Performs day-of-event accessibility liaison duties for visitors, artists, clients, and organizers as needed.

Partners with Marketing & Communications department to update the accessibility and visitor services language on the web site as needed. Works across areas to make electronic versions of selected materials available online. Reviews programming web and print materials to ensure accessibility call outs are listed where appropriate and develop guides for standardization where necessary. Develops instructional guides, forms, and accessibility checklists to assist WCA staff when preparing for upcoming programs and events. Coordinates marketing efforts for accessibility programs and writes and edits promotional content.

Creates and collaborates with a Cross-disability Community Advisory Group to conduct and report on accessibility audits of the center focused on the physical accessibility of the building, and internal programming. Works with the Executive Director’s office, Director of Art & Resilience, Director of Visitor Experience, and the Digital Accessibility Coordinator to create an accessibility working group within the Wex. Performs accessibility reviews and evaluations with network of staff, university, community partners, and service providers.

Partners with the Wex’s Development office to identify, research, and pursue grants and other potential funding sources to support new accessibility efforts and existing programs. Identifies and responds to accessibility needs in the local community. Conceives, co-develops, manages, and facilitates meaningful programs and initiatives that provide impactful experiences, attract new audiences, and engender critical conversations, develops inclusive, accessible programs such as Deaf Café and Audio Café. Builds partnerships with state and local organizations and groups that bridge access to the arts. Promotes a disability-led model to make inroads with programs and audience development for ongoing community building at the Wex. Gathers pertinent data, contributes to evaluation and report writing, tracks expenses. Utilizes program data to make strategic decisions when program planning. Where relevant, infuses the interests, goals, and perspectives of communities into planning conversations, decision making, and institutional vision-setting.

Works with various partners within the WCA to schedule supportive, skill-developing workshops and annual trainings on multiple aspects of accessibility. Research and design a professional development strategy to increase the Wex’s knowledge on what peer institutions and other organizations are doing to lead the way in accessibility. Stays up to date on accessibility requirements and best practices. Develops a network within OSU faculty and staff, and with peer institutions (local, national, international) to stay on point with accessibility offerings and continue to outpace trends for supporting various communities, including the cross-disability community. Identifies relationship-building opportunities and partnerships within the community. Attends and presents at conferences and workshops. Acts as a guest speaker in varied settings, including OSU classrooms and programs.

Acts as the unit’s Accessibility Manager liaison within the University, to communicate needs and seek support from Ohio State’s ADA Coordinator’s Office

Duties Description

80%      Direct, strategize, and serve overall accessibility program of the Wexner Center.

10%      Along with Director of Visitor Experience, Visitor Experience Managers, Digital Accessibility Coordinator, Program Team, Marketing & Communications, Technical Services, Facilities, and Security Services, continually create and evaluate ways in which to enhance our patrons’ and visitors’ experiences.

5%          Supervise up to 3 Accessibility Interns (WCA program for paid or course credit-based internships). (Dr. Margaret Price, Director of the Disability Studies Program in the Dept. of English serves as academic advisor for this course credit-based internship).

5%          In conjunction with Director of Visitor Experience, develop, monitor, and manage WCA accessibility expenses to develop a long-term strategy within accessibility context; ensure event purchasing policies and procedures are well managed, including facilitating Workday procurements, reconciling event expenses, and maintaining expense records.

Supervises

Up to 3 Accessibility Interns per academic year.

Minimum Education Required
Bachelor’s degree in the arts and humanities and a minimum of 6 years of experience in museum or cultural organization, public engagement, or public programming required. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Facility with public presentation and convening diverse public groups. Strong cultural competencies and consciousness of cultural identities and differences.
