Call for Submissions: Psych Anthro and Disability Studies

Does your work engage with themes in both psychological anthropology and disability studies (broadly conceived)?  I am looking to include one additional chapter in the book project Innovations in Psychological Anthropology (project description appended below) on a topic related to psychological anthropology and disability.  If interested, please submit a 250-word abstract to rjlester@wustl.edu mailto:rjlester@wustl.edu  by Friday, June 18.

Innovations in Psychological Anthropology

This volume with Routledge Press will be an interrogation and revisioning of the field of psychological anthropology from perspectives historically marginalized in our field, with the aim of bringing psychological anthropology into contemporary conversations in anthropology and engaging the next generation of scholars.

As the broader field of anthropology contends with its colonial, misogynist, and heteronormative legacies, questions about whether we should "let anthropology burn" (Jobson 2020) have come to the fore, centering on whether a discipline so fundamentally rooted in the colonialist enterprise is even remotely redeemable; and if so, how.
Psychological anthropology has remained largely marginalized from these discussions, given its reputation for being theoretically, methodologically, and even ideologically old-fashioned.  To become an active participant in anthropology's disciplinary reckoning, and to chart ethical, responsible, and constructive ways forward, we must be willing to look unflinchingly at the possibility that there is something to this critique and that our subdiscipline is in need of radical revisioning.  What, for example, would de-colonial, queer, black feminist, etc., psychological anthropologies look like, and how might such perspectives both constructively destabilize old frameworks and seed innovative new engagements?

The volume will be undergraduate accessible, with an online companion to enable deeper inquiry and further engagement.  Some possible sample themes include: decolonial methodologies in psychological anthropology, queer perspectives on child development, gender non-conformity and understandings of the self, whether and how psychoanalysis can be deployed responsibly, justice as a value in psychological anthropological work, etc.  These are just illustrations--submissions of any sort related to the volume theme will be considered.
