Caution! This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba.

Racism and (neuro)ableism work hand in hand often re school exclusions, so maybe some on the list can distribute the below call too

(I'm not involved in the project but it looks important)

Dear all

Please see below an invitation to participate in an element of a research project I am privileged to deliver with my colleagues at the Runnymede Trust, we would appreciate your support and contributions.

The Runnymede Trust - the UK’s leading race equality thinktank - are partnering with the Communities Empowerment Network (CEN) - a London based charity that promotes equality of opportunity for those who would otherwise be discriminated against because of their race, primarily in the areas of school admissions and exclusions - to deliver a research project focusing on the disproportionate exclusion of racially minoritised young people from school in England.

We want to understand how school exclusion has affected the lives of Black/African Caribbean descent adults. The aim is to understand how people navigated, adjusted, overcame or struggled since they were excluded in school.

Therefore, we are looking to recruit adults of Black/African-Caribbean descent (including those of mixed heritage) between the ages of 25 & 35, who have previously experienced temporary or permanent exclusion, as well as those that had been moved to Alternative Provision (AP) or Pupil Referral Unit/s (PRUs) during their educational journey, to participate in a focus group. We are looking for participants that attended school in the following areas: Birmingham or Wolverhampton; Bristol; Hackney; and Manchester.

We can offer 121 interviews for those who would prefer more privacy. We are looking for adults who are willing to share their experiences of school exclusion as well as offer insights on their transition to adulthood, and how they think schools can do better in supporting young Black people.

You do not have to take part, and the decision to do so is entirely up to you. We have developed a Participant Information sheet for those interested in learning more about the project and what their involvement would entail. If you do decide you want to take part, we will ask you to sign a consent form so we have a record of your decision. You can change your mind at any time during the research without giving a reason.

If you are interested in participating and want to find out more, please reach to our researchers Hassaan Anwari (hassaan@runnymedetrust.orgmailto:hassaan@runnymedetrust.org) or Hannah Francis (hannah@runnymedetrust.orgmailto:hannah@runnymedetrust.org) and we will forward you a Participant Information sheet and consent form. Please do email us if you have any further questions.

I may occasionally send emails outside of standard office hours, please don't feel obligated to respond until you resume your working hours - balance is key!
